News on Sultan of Johor's birthday event

Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar,
Sultan of Johor

THE Sultan of Johor today says the Federal Constitution will be contravened, if Malaysia ratifies the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), as well as the government's decision to sign the instrument to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), The Star reported.

Monarchy, Malays and Islam

Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar said that this was because it touched on the powers of the monarchy, the privileges of the Malays and the sanctity of Islam in Malaysia.

"The government must remember the social contract in the history of the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, where the privileges of the Malays, the power of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers must not be touched or lessened.

Sultan's reminder to (federal) government

"I would like to remind the government to not follow international conventions just to get recognition from outsiders, because it will destroy the nation's sovereignty and threaten the rakyat's well being," added Sultan Ibrahim.

Sultan Ibrahim decreed this during His Majesty's official birthday celebrations held at Dewan Singgahsana at the Istana Besar, Johor Bahru on Saturday, 23 March 2019.

Live in peace, united and harmony

His Majesty also urged the people in Johor to always live in cooperation and to practise tolerance and respect for each other.

"Things that are sensitive for a particular race or religion should not be treated with disgrace or humiliation as it will create anger and tension among the multiracial society in our country," he said.

Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)

The ICC is the first permanent judicial institution having jurisdiction over genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.

Saifuddin
Abdullah,
Foreign
Minister

Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah had signed the Instrument of Accession to the Rome Statute of ICC  on 4 March 2019 and the instrument was deposited to the Secretary-General of  the United Nations on the same day.

Malaysia's accession to Rome Statute reflects its commitment to combating international crimes for global peace and security, according to Wisma Putra.

Agong had been informed of the Cabinet's decision

Wisma Putra also confirmed that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Paduka Ayahanda Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah had been informed by Saifuddin on the Cabinet's decision on the accession on 15 February 2019.

Anti-ICERD demonstration in Kuala Lumpur, November, 2018

In November, 2018, the government decided not to ratify ICERD amid rising protests by the opponents who claimed that the United Nations human rights agreement would jeopardize the special rights of Malays and other Bumiputras in the country.
