THE joyous and blissful Christmas in Malaysia this year saw something unusual but special. The Malaysian Islamic affairs minister is in love.
On 25 December 2018, "Warkah Dari Cordova" (A Letter from Cordova), a special "romantic" letter from Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa to a special woman Nurul Izzah Anwar was sent openly via Facebook while he was travelling on the road to Madrid.

Mujahid expressed that thinking of Nurul, he was unable to sleep. Nurul Izzah, the daughter of Malaysian prime minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim, made shock announcement on 17 December 2018 of her immediate resignations from all posts in PKR (ruling Harapan coalition component) and government. However, she would remain as member of parliament for Permatang Pauh, Penang.
It became more exciting when Mujahid addressed himself as "kekanda", in classical Malay palace tradition, with dual meaning of endearment, either an elder brother or a lover. And he addressed Nurul as "adinda", meaning either a younger sister or sweetheart.

The 25-paragraph letter looks like Mujahid had switched his career from a politician to film star. This entitles him to "love gossips".
Secret love affair could be scandalous. Nevertheless, when it comes from open political platform, it became decent.
Nurul and Mujahid |
Mujahid might say in writing that he couldn't sleep because of Nurul Izzah Anwar Ibrahim's resignations. Indirectly, it would also mean that he could not sleep because the woman he desires was always in his mind by heart.
It is believed that the minister in the prime minister's department in-charge of Islamic affairs was sincere in advising Nurul to re-consider her decision to resign. Not only Mujahid, most of the supporters and observers are convinced with the capability, credibility and the bright future of the prime minister-in-waiting's daughter.
At the same time, it doesn't go against the principle of intimate relationship. A loving couple advising to each other has been a usual practice.
Mujahid's 'A letter from Cordova' was quite similar to a letter from Zainuddin to Hayati in the novel entitled "Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wjick" (The Sunken Van der Wjick Ship) written by legendary Indonesian Islamic scholar Prof Dr Hamka.
The letter was immediately responded by thousands of netizens in social media mixed with positive and negative comments.
Najib Razak advised Mujahid to pray to Allah |
Former Malaysian prime minister asked Mujahid for how many nights that he couldn't sleep. Najib Razak also advised Mujahid to pray to Allah so as to ensure him to sleep well and be calm. He also described the issue as (political) drama.
"Adinda" Khairy Jamaluddin |
Former sports and youth minister tweeted, addressed the finance minister as "kekanda" (Lim) Guan Eng and himself "adinda" Khairy Jamaluddin. He was believed to refer to Mujahid's letter eventhough the content was about government's aid to the poor.

Well known Malaysian political blogger Shahbudin Husin disagreed with Mujahid and questioned whether he was trying to 'flirt around'. He also published a comment from Perlis mufti (Perlis state religion head) on wrong words used at the wrong place. However, Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin in his write-up commented in general and did not refer to any individual.
On 28 December 2018, Malaysian influential laurette A Samad Said told politicians to be careful when using courtly language (such as "kekanda" and "adinda") in their public correspondences, as it could have different connotations. "It is not advisable in sensitive times." he added.

The terms of endearment were typically used in private letters or conversations between lovers, family and close friends. "Best to keep it private or..." Samad said, "...you then unconsciously enter wrong boundaries and end up endangering yourself."
Whatever it is, there is nothing wrong with this issue. If they were to get married one day, we should pray for their happiness. Nurul's parents, Anwar Ibrahim and deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are expected to give their blessings without serious obstacles.

Furthermore, Mujahid's ministerial position will not be affected at all. Survey specialist cum politician Rafizi Ramli's Invoke would be happy to assist him for higher approval ratings.

The advantages of Mujahid and Nurul's marriage are as follows:
(1) As religious minister, Mujahid is capable to perform exemplary polygamy concept as a way of life.
(2) Mujahid would be seen as a real warrior when there is a lady reformist behind him.
(3) The marriage will strengthen the ruling coalition when PKR and Amanah could merge as twin parties. Mujahid is Amanah's vice president.
(4) With Nurul support and assistance, women will be more protected under the perspective of Islam.
(5) The combination of Mujahid and Nurul will expedite the process of New Malaysia.
Certain parts of this article may be percepted imaginery. In politics, nothing is impossible, including the impossibilities. The new year 2019 will prove it right.
