THE charter signed between UMNO and PAS, formalising the cooperation between the country's two largest Malay Muslim political parties, is 'moderate' in nature, despite initial fears it woud have extreme leanings, a political analyst said.
In line with Federal Constitution
Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the charter, in fact, was based on the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
Moderate, central approach
"It was not too focused on Islam. Contrary to claims the union posed a threat to Malaysia's multiracial community, the charter took a central right approach," Awang was quoted saying by FMT.
He described the left as being linked to socialism and progressivism, while the right equated with capitalism and conservatism.
Malays, Islam and Bahasa Melayu
The national unity charter - Piagam Muafakat Nasional - signed by the PAS and UMNO presidents yesterday seeks to uphold the interest of the Malays, Islam as the official religion, and Malay as the national language.
It vows to restore the confidence of the people in the "leadership of Islam, the Malays and the Bumiputeras".
To challenge PH, not non-Malays
Awang also said it was clear that the PAS-UMNO alliance was meant to take on Pakatan Harapan (PH) and not challenge the non-Malays.
The two parties, he said, were aware that apart from issues related to the Malay community, voters were also unhappy with the ruling coalition, especially when it came to education and the civil service.
While they are offering alternative to the rakyat, Awang also saw the charter as a re-branding of the opposition brand whose narrative will revolve around the people's dissatisfaction with Putrajaya.
However, he said the two parties will push youth leaders to the fore, while UMNO needs to address the infighting.
Alliance will put PH under pressure
Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Azmi Hassan says the alliance will put PH under pressure, especially its two components PPBM and Amanah, which are tasked with wooing the Malay electorate.
He cited the increasing support for the opposition in recent by-elections and PH has failed to win the support of the Malays despite being in power for over a year.
The veteran journalist said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang played "third fiddle" to Najib and Zahid, the former and current UMNO president respectively, who are both facing multiple corruption charges.
The Malay power political development has brought serious difficulty to PH when PPBM and Amanah are not as strong as they should be.
PKR is divided into two - pro-president Anwar Ibrahim and pro-deputy Azmin Ali. Pro-Azmin camp was seen as pro-Mahathir, especially on PM-8 drama. The plot and sub-plot keep on running, including the scene of Sandakan homosexual video involved two men allegedly implicated a prominent politician as one of the actors.
However, it was clarified by relevant parties that the video was "blurry" and not very clear. So far only one actor had confessed that he was the one in the video. Therefore, they couldn't conclusively identified who was the other one. Looked like him but it was not him.
And they are too busy with the infighting within the leading PH's component.
At the same time, UMNO and PAS have quite successfully convinced the Malays that DAP is anti-Malays and anti-Islam.
Mahathir, the megastar
If politics can be compared to international soccer, Dr Mahathir is as good as Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. The highest bidder who wants to win and attracts crowd, will get him playing in the team. Any team, be it Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona or Harimau Malaya.
It looks like he is going to be the winner again. This has sparked speculation that hints Dr Mahathir Mohamad will switch coalition and remain as prime minister of Tanah Melayu, Sabah and Sarawak.
