Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister |
RECENTLY, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad wrote in his official blog chedet.cc about his disappointment on the majority of Malays in this country who were seen failed to participate effectively in Malaysian economy.
He was repeating the same old story for the past 50 years that British had to import workers from China and India to perform the so-called 3D jobs - difficult, dangerous and dirty - in the tin mining and the rubber tapping (agriculture) sectors respectively. That was before Malaya independence on 31 August 1957.
And now, he repeats the same point that Malays are lazy and not willing to work hard to succeed. Don't blame the new generation of migrants such as Indonesians, Bangladeshis, Nepaleses, as well as those from Myanmar, Pakistan, Cambodia, etc. These migrants are going to take over and control the economy of this country, like what Malaysian Chinese and Indians did.
Come on Dr Mahathir. You may have done many good things to Malaysia when you were given 22 years to lead the nation until 2003.
Why only Malays to be blamed? What about Chinese? Indians? Kadazan? Bajau? Orang Asal? Dayak? Iban? And all other natives in Sabah and Sarawak? Are they willing to do the 3D-jobs now? Not only Malays but Malaysians.
If Malays have no choice except to be blamed, it is not the majority of the Malays. It's only about 5 per cent of Malays who were the political-related cronies, relatives, sons and daughters, royal families and those opportunists (some of them also known as Umnoputras). Most of them chose an easy way out to become rich on the expense of another 95 per cent Malays and other races considered under B40 category.
Sadly, the elitists were supported by the then authorities, including the powerful government of prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself from 1981 to 2003 for 22 years.
The policy initiated by Abdul Razak Hussein, the Malaysian second prime minister, to assist Malays, with the support from leaders in MCA and MIC, as well as intelectual figures during that time, could be good with the introduction of New Economic Policy (NEP).
Unfortunately, the implementation of the policy was abused throughout the period, continued by the new policy, Vision 2020 from 1990 to 2020.
Pointing fingers and blaming each other are not the right things to do at this juncture as they would not help us to resolve the issue.
The government should accept the facts that the policies implemented have not been successful as planned. Even though the policies were not considered as miserable failure, it does not mean that the shortcomings cannot be rectified. Failed policy should not be continued.
Necessary actions by the government of the day in fighting corruptions, implementation of open tender system, restoration of rule of law, separation of power, transparent management and so on are at least something better than nothing at all.
Unfortunately, it looks like all the good moves have been disrupted by political infighting, PM-8 questionable issue, too much politicking among leaders, be it within the government or oppositìon. These unwanted development have jeopardised the smooth running of the government administration badly.
If we believe what has been spreading on the social media, it appears that everybody is playing with racial and religious sentiments. Especially, Malays, Chinese and Indians, the main ethnics in the country. Dòes it really happen?
Let us be practical and face the reality. In terms of economy, financial ability and purchasing power, Malays are behind the Chinese and Indians.
Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) with above 90 per cent Malay pupils is also behind Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) in term of discipline and academic achievement.
The education ministry should study how the performance of SK can be improved including consulting and learning from both SJKC and SJKT.
It's the right time now for Malays to start thinking more positively that we have lost almost everything after 62 years. Tanah Melayu does not absolutely belong to Malays anymore. Whether we like it or not, Malaysia belongs to Malaysians.
We are indeed seen as the third class citizens in our own country. There is no such thing as tuan. Non-Malays may not say it openly. But that is what some of them feel and look at Malays.
Be the real Malays or anak Melayu tulen to work hard and compete independently. Malays have been protected wrongly and weakening the Malays instead.
Don't trust politicians as they have proven themselves that they have no capabilities to strengthen the Malays' real abilities. Malays can do it by themselves.
After 62 years achieving independence from British, after 62 years Malaya, now Malaysia led by all Malay leaders, the time has come.
Malays will be stronger and become the real Malays when they realise Tanah Melayu is no longer theirs.
