Motorcycle ride-sharing services 'un-Islamic' when men and women ride together, says Selangor mufti

THE act of two individuals of opposite genders and without family ties riding on the same motorcycle is an un-Islamic act, the Selangor state mufti (Islamic religious leader) reportedly claimed yesterday, Thursday 22 August 2019.

Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid said that two male and female individuals who are not mahram - either family members or relatives forbidden from marrying each other - riding together on a motorcycle could lead to accusations, and that it would be better not to have Go-Jek ride-sharing service to avoid such defamatory accusations.

He was also reported by Sinar Harian suggesting that the federal government could possibly think of other measures.

Go-Jek

Go-Jek is an Indonesian company that offers popular ride-sharing services on motorcycles in its home country, which has the world's largest Muslim population. Go-Jek has also expanded to Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.


Meanwhile, e-hailing firm Grab claimed it has been providing motorcycle ride-sharing services in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam since 2014. Grab also sought Malaysians' opinions on if it were to provide such services in Malaysia.

Local firm Dego Ride, initiated and operated by Big Blue Taxi founder Shamsubahrin Ismail, had in late 2016 pioneered the provision of short motorcycle ride-sharing trips as a transportation solution, but was previously banned by the government.

In a press conference at Wisma Central, Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Shamsubahrin, who disagreed with Go-Jek, said that Go-Jek was suitable in Indonesia, but not in Malaysia.


"Go-Jek can be done in Indonesia because their poverty rate is very high, unlike in Malaysia.


"Also, their culture is very different compared with ours. In Indonesia, their women can hug the rider (most of the riders are men) just like that but how about Malaysia? Do we want to see our women hugging the riders here and there?" asked Shamsubahrin, who threatened to lead a demonstration in front of youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's house and transport minister Anthony Loke's house.

Shah Alam City YESTERDAY, FMT reported that the capital city of Selangor had become very quiet, slow and almost no business, many buildings unoccupied, which one of them only utilised by less than ten staff of a company.
