Only a few allowed to remain in court public gallery
The Edge reported the judge hearing the winding-up petition of Sapura Holdings Sdn Bhd yesterday, Thursday 15 May 2025, ordered the public gallery to be cleared of bystanders, including members of the media. Only a few select individuals were allowed to remain.

This occurred as the feuding brothers, Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin and Datuk Shahriman Shamsuddin, agreed to a protective order to restrict others from being in court while their father, Tan Sri Shamsuddin Abdul Kadir, continued his testimony. Shamsuddin is also the founder of Sapura Holdings.
At the start of proceedings on Thursday before Judge Encik Leong Wai Hong, Shahril’s lawyer, Encik Rabindra S Nathan said his client had filed a protective order with the court on 3 April to limit who could access court documents during the trial.
This was not opposed by Shahriman's lawyer, Encik Gopal Sreeneevasan, Rabindra said. He then read out a list of people who were allowed to be in court, besides Shahril, Shahriman and their business partner, Datuk Rameli Musa.
“Because both parties are in agreement with the protective order, I will have to clear the court,” the judge then said.
Rabindra only began his cross-examination of Shamsuddin once the courtroom was cleared.
The next hearing of the case is scheduled for 21 May, according to a source close to the matter. The public gallery will reopen after a brief continuation of Shamsuddin's cross-examination, the source said.
The court proceedings stemmed from a petition Shahriman filed on 23 September last year to wind up Sapura Holdings, claiming it was necessary for a fair distribution of assets. Shahril opposed this, arguing that it is not a family company.
Shahriman and Shahril own a 40.5% direct stake each in Sapura Holdings, while their equally owned entity, Brothers Capital Sdn Bhd, holds 15%. Rameli owns the remaining 4% interest in the company.
Cik Idza Hajar Ahmad Idzam from Zul Rafique & Partners represented Sapura Holdings, while Rameli was represented by Encik Ranjit Singh of Ranjit Singh & Yeoh.
