Universiti Malaya — number one in Malaysia, 16th in Asia, 58th in the world
Malaysia achieved the world’s highest rate of improvement among countries with 10 or more ranked universities, with 70% of its 32 universities climbing the rankings
Universiti Malaya (UM) remains the country’s top university in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings after moving up two positions to 58th globally, FMT reported just now.
The QS World University Rankings 2026, released today, ranked UM 16th in Asia. UM was also the country’s top performer in five of the nine indicators, most notably in employer reputation (40th) and academic reputation (58th).
Second to UM was Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, which climbed 12 spots from 138th to 126th. Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia were ranked third in Malaysia after climbing 14 and 12 spots respectively for a tie at 134th spot.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, which rose 28 spots to place 153rd, was the only other Malaysian university in the top 200. Sunway University and Universiti Utara Malaysia moved into the top 500 after placing 410th and 491st respectively.
In a statement, QS said Malaysia had achieved the world’s highest rate of improvement among countries with 10 or more ranked universities, with 70% of its 32 universities climbing the rankings.
QS also said Malaysia was now home to 10 universities in the top 500, two more than last year and the joint fourth highest in Asia.
Malaysia outperformed the global average in five of the nine indicators used to evaluate the universities, most notably in academic reputation, international research network, and faculty-student ratio.
It dropped overall in the other four indicators, with the sharpest drop in employment outcomes which QS said marked a challenge for the country.
QS senior vice-president Ben Sowter said while Malaysian universities had made significant strides in the rankings, there remained untapped potential in areas such as of employability, sustainability strategy, and research, seen as central to the rankings and sustained higher education excellence.
“As Malaysia competes with regional peers like Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam, investing in these areas will not only enhance Malaysia’s global reputation but also ensure that its universities play a transformative role in shaping a skilled, future-ready workforce,” said Sowter.
“To meet the demands of an AI-driven, rapidly evolving global ecosystem, Malaysia’s higher education institutions must equip graduates with both the technical skills and human competencies required to excel in the workforce and drive innovation.”
The QS World University Rankings 2026 featured more than 1,500 universities across 106 countries and territories. They were evaluated across nine indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international students ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology retained its position at the top of the global rankings for the 14th consecutive year. Imperial College London continued to hold the second spot, while Stanford University ascended three places to rank third.
The University of Oxford and Harvard University each moved down one rank to occupy the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Among Asian institutions, Singapore was the only country featured in the global top 10, with the National University of Singapore ranked eighth worldwide and first in Asia.
The University of Hong Kong secured the second position in Asia, while Nanyang Technological University, also based in Singapore, was ranked third in the region.
