JAIS probing ownership of raided Puchong poultry plant
News portal FMT reported the Selangor Islamic religious department (JAIS) is seeking further information on the ownership of a poultry processing plant in Puchong raided by authorities over allegations that chickens were electrocuted to death before being processed for distribution.
“Based on information obtained from the people arrested in the case, operations at the premises were allegedly run by more than one company or organisation.
“Jais is currently seeking further information from the district and land office on the actual owner of the premises and the owners of companies registered at the address,” he said in a statement.
He urged anyone with information relevant to the ongoing investigation to cooperate with Jais and the police.
Shahzihan also confirmed that Jais had no records of any application for halal certification by the premises.
“Jais records also showed that the Selangor Islamic religious council (MAIS) had never issued any slaughtering accreditation for slaughtering activities carried out at the premises,” he said.
On Saturday, MAIS chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said a preliminary investigation found that the slaughterhouse, which had been operating since 2004, was owned by a Muslim and supplied processed chicken to Muslim-owned restaurants.
The multi-agency-led raid resulted in the arrest of 12 foreign workers and seizure of more than 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken reportedly sourced from several poultry farms around Sepang.
The processed chickens were believed to have been distributed to restaurants, grocery shops and supermarkets across the Klang Valley.
Salehuddin said an investigation found that the plant used electric water baths to stun the chickens, but the electrical voltage used was too high.
This instantly killed the birds when they were dunked into the water before being slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.
