A carpenter receives Mercedes Benz as payment for his unique cengal table

In Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, the country's Malay-language prestigious newspaper Utusan Malaysia reported on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, the uniqueness of a table made from a Cengal tree stump over 100 years old lies not only in its creative design featuring a "fish pond," but also in its distinct value—so much so that it was traded for a Mercedes-Benz worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

Born from the creativity of 61-year-old woodworker Encik Mohd. Zainasir Taib from Kampung Teluk Pasu, the table took about two years to complete using a combination of traditional woodworking techniques and modern methods.
He shared that the idea to create the table sparked after he acquired a Cengal tree stump that wasn’t originally planned to be turned into furniture.
Upon noticing the stump’s natural shape, which featured hollows and natural cavities, he was inspired to transform it into a unique table while preserving most of the wood’s original characteristics.
"At first, I wasn’t looking for that wood to make a table. As it happened, when I got the stump, I saw something could be made out of it. From there, I started thinking about how to utilize the space and original shape of the wood to make something more creative and uniquely valuable," he told the Malay daily.
According to Mohd. Zainasir, crafting furniture from fresh wood is not easy because live wood contains sap and requires a specific period to dry before it can be shaped.
To speed up the drying process, he used a combination of water and heat through high-pressure water spraying and the application of fire.
He noted that Cengal trees typically need to reach an age of over 100 years before they are suitable for logging to yield mature, high-quality timber.
The table-making process required great precision because he wanted to maintain the authenticity of the stump's shape while using supplementary materials to utilize the empty spaces within the wood.
"Alhamdulillah, even though it took nearly two years because it was done during my spare time, the table was finally completed as planned," he said.
Regarding the exchange of the table for a Mercedes car, he explained that the deal happened by chance when a friend became interested in owning the piece of work.
The table now belongs to his friend and will be moved home as soon as his friend's house under construction is finished.
He added that the value of an artwork like this table depends on an individual's interest and appreciation for its uniqueness and craftsmanship.
