I stand by the question asked and will not apologize, says a Malaysian university student
She also reiterated her stand not to apologize following the statement made during the International Future Young Leaders Summit in Kuala Lumpur recently, which sparked debate among various parties.
"I stand by the question asked and will not apologize. This is because donating hard-earned money to the elite is indeed, yes, the most foolish and most immoral act.
"I hope more people find the courage to speak out about corruption and integrity without fear," Malay daily Harian Metro quoted Ummi Umairah as saying via her post on her Instagram account yesterday.
The view later sparked debate on social media, including condemnation and comments containing threats against the student.
"I have never picked and chosen which issues to fight for. I was present at the demonstration against former Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tan Sri Azam Baki.
"I have also spoken out about the inequality of opportunities at my university. Since day one, I have consistently voiced my stand," she said.
Ummi Umairah also expressed disappointment at the reaction of a segment of society, which she described as being influenced by cyberbullying, political obsession, and a feudal mentality.
"Describing an act as stupid is not an offense under the law. It is a firm expression to describe an action that is hard to believe or unreasonable.
"Critical thinking is increasingly eroding. People read, but they do not think, research, or understand what they are reading. Context is distorted.
"Describing an act as foolish is not the same as calling someone foolish," she said.
