Rompin PAS MP urges federal government to revive Tiomsn airport project, control ferry fare
The government should reconsider its decision to scrap plans for an international airport on Pulau Tioman to ease access for more than 3,600 residents and support tourism, says an opposition MP from PAS under Pertikaian Nasional.
Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah (PN-Rompin, Pahang) said the island, a gazetted marine park, draws about 250,000 tourists annually, but its near-total reliance on sea transport makes movement, local logistics and economic activities difficult.
“Conserving Tioman is a shared trust. However, conservation and connectivity are not two opposing things.
“Cancelling the project does not solve the access problems for residents and operators on the island,” FMT quoted him as saying while debating the 2027 budget in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Cabinet decided in August 2023 not to proceed with the proposed Tioman International Airport after an environmental impact assessment found that the project, which involved reclaiming 76% of the sea area, could significantly harm marine ecology.
The assessment identified 120 species of hard coral and 12 species of soft coral in the area.
On ferry travel, Khalib urged operators of the Teluk Gading-Pulau Tioman route to cancel the new fare hike, which he said burdened tourists and residents.
He said higher fares at a time of economic difficulty could hurt tourist arrivals and the income of businesses on the island.
“I also urge the government to intervene by reviewing the basis for the fare increase, in addition to ensuring that comfortable and quality services are provided,” said Khalib.
