Nik Nazmi confirms he was detained on suspicion of khalwat (close proximity)
Hot news expert newspaper Kosmo! and its portal Kosmo Online today reported that former Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability of the Madani Unity Government, Encik Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, 44, confirmed that he was one of the individuals arrested by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) in a case of allegedly khalwat (close proximity) with a non-mahram woman in a closed place in Petaling Jaya, on the day before yesterday.
As quoted by the Malay-language daily, Nik Nazmi said that during the incident, he and the woman were holding a discussion regarding a project after starting their meeting at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
He said they then decided to continue the discussion in Petaling Jaya to look at some materials related to the project.
"When the JAIS officers arrived, it was indeed only myself and the woman who were present. I admit that it was an (shariah) offence.
“As I also informed the JAIS Officers, we truly did not engage in any indecent acts that would arouse suspicion.
“I would like to apologize to my wife, her family, our family, and everyone affected by the error in judgment at the time of the incident, which should never have happened,” he said in a statement today.
Commenting further, he stated that he will cooperate with any subsequent legal proceedings.
At the same time, Nik Nazmi also apologized to the Bersama party for disappointing its members and supporters following the issue.
He added that he would accept any decision made by the party regarding the matter.
"I hope all parties will respect the legal process and not prolong the trial through the media," he said.
