Not power crazy, but sense of responsibility

Better known as Bersatu, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s "Iron Lady" Datuk Seri Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has dismissed calls for her to resign as Melaka Perikatan Nasional chief following the decision of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign as the coalition’s chairman, Malaysian media reported yesterday.

Mas Ermieyati said her decision not to step down was not driven by a desire to cling to position or power.

“Rather, it is based on considerations of responsibility, organisational stability, and the broader interest of PN at the state level,” she said in a statement yesterday as quoted by FMT.

She also said there was no internal conflict within the state chapter that warranted her immediate resignation, adding that relations among PN component parties in the state remained harmonious.

She said Melaka PN is in a crucial phase as it is preparing for a state election expected within the next four to six months, and that leadership continuity is important to ensure effective coordination and momentum.

“Any sudden change would only risk weakening the momentum that has been collectively built,” she said.

Mas Ermieyati also rejected claims that state-level PN appointments were automatically nullified following Muhyiddin’s resignation as coalition chairman.

She said such positions were decided collectively by the PN Supreme Council.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin announced that he would step down as PN chairman effective 1 January 2026. Immediately after his announcement, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said he would bow out as PN secretary-general and Selangor PN liaison committee chairman on 1st January as well.

Others, including Johor PN chairman Dr Encik Sahruddin Jamal, Perak PN chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Negeri Sembilan PN chief Encik Hanifah Abu Baker, also announced their resignations from their posts in the coalition.

In the past week, several PAS leaders had accused Bersatu of weakness and betrayal for not taking action against the five assemblymen who withdrew support for the now-former Perlis Menteri Besar Encik Shukri Ramli.

Mas Ermieyati, who is the Masjid Tanah MP, called for calm, saying that public spats on social media involving Bersatu and PAS would erode public confidence in PN as an alternative government.

She said she was prepared to relinquish both her positions as Melaka PN chief and PN women’s wing chief if it was a collective decision made through proper party channels and in the best interest of the coalition.

MAHATHIR MAY REJOIN UMNO

What Mahathir expected did not happen Initially, Mahathir Mohamad thought his party – PPBM (Bersatu) – could  morph  into a new version of UMNO. After all, it was him who brilliantly destroyed the original UMNO in 1988 and created “UMNO Baru” (the current UMNO version 2.0). But unlike in 1988, Mr. Mahathir had quit UMNO to form PPBM on 8 September 2016, and was no longer in charge of UMNO. UMNO won four times higher than Bersatu in GE14 Hence, after he leveraged on opposition Pakatan Harapan and stunningly defeated the scandal-plagued Najib government, his first priority was  recruiting  UMNO MPs to join his party. Shah Alam City YESTERDAY, FMT reported that the capital city of Selangor had become very quiet, slow and almost no business, many buildings unoccupied, which one of them only utilised by less than ten staff of a company. Some factories closed down, businesses from petty traders to big timers closed shops for the past six months and so on. A lawyer's personal opinion on Tommy Thomas' controversial book

  Read it while you still can REVIEW - *"My Story: Justice in the Wilderness" by Tommy Thomas* SPOILERS (Then again, it's a memoir, so does that really count? But you've been warned). Well I'll cut to the chase. I loved the book. But I think a huge part of why I loved it is because I also happen to be a lawyer, a litigator, and a keen follower of Malaysian politics. It doesn't hurt either that Tommy Thomas' values for the most part, align with mine. It's an honest book, in the sense that he really doesn't bother mincing his words or sparing anyone's feelings (that should be apparent by now, given the number of people who have lodged complaints, filed police reports, and threatened to sue him over the book). Reading it gives you the impression that Tommy Thomas really doesn't care (or if you're French, DGAF). And that for me, was the most compelling reason why I stayed up 2 nights in a row to finish this book (at 500+ pages, it's pre...
