Mandatory bank guarantee required — Only professional, responsible, integrity-driven Umrah agencies allowed to operate

Minister says this will protect pilgrims and ensure timely compensation in cases of fraud, negligence, or operational failures by travel operators

Ministry orders bank guarantee for umrah agencies after pilgrims stranded

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (picture, top) has ordered travel agencies offering umrah packages to put up mandatory bank guarantees after 36 pilgrims were stranded in Madinah because of a company’s failure to provide accommodation and return flights.

Referring to a Facebook post last night by the minister himself, FMT quoted Tiong as saying these bank guarantees would protect pilgrims and ensure timely compensation in cases of fraud, negligence, or operational failures by travel operators.

In a Facebook post this evening, he noted that the stranded pilgrims, including the elderly and children, had paid RM7,600 each and were forced to seek charitable donations to purchase return tickets.

The matter was reported to the ministry through the Malaysian embassy in Riyadh, with the government helping to secure the pilgrims’ passage back to Malaysia yesterday.

“The agency neglected its basic responsibilities. While their return is a relief, the fact that such incidents continue to occur is unacceptable and demands immediate decisive action.

“Incidents like this occur frequently, causing public outrage and leaving victims helpless. Many pilgrims have had to bear significant losses and struggle to find a way home without any support from the operators who should have been responsible,” he said.

Tiong said the ministry’s preliminary investigation found that the company’s premises were no longer in operation.

A report recommending the cancellation of the company’s licence is being finalised for consideration, he said.

“The ministry will ensure that only agencies that are professional, responsible, and integrity-driven are allowed to operate,” he added.

MAHATHIR MAY REJOIN UMNO

What Mahathir expected did not happen Initially, Mahathir Mohamad thought his party – PPBM (Bersatu) – could  morph  into a new version of UMNO. After all, it was him who brilliantly destroyed the original UMNO in 1988 and created “UMNO Baru” (the current UMNO version 2.0). But unlike in 1988, Mr. Mahathir had quit UMNO to form PPBM on 8 September 2016, and was no longer in charge of UMNO. A lawyer's personal opinion on Tommy Thomas' controversial book

  Read it while you still can REVIEW - *"My Story: Justice in the Wilderness" by Tommy Thomas* SPOILERS (Then again, it's a memoir, so does that really count? But you've been warned). Well I'll cut to the chase. I loved the book. But I think a huge part of why I loved it is because I also happen to be a lawyer, a litigator, and a keen follower of Malaysian politics. It doesn't hurt either that Tommy Thomas' values for the most part, align with mine. It's an honest book, in the sense that he really doesn't bother mincing his words or sparing anyone's feelings (that should be apparent by now, given the number of people who have lodged complaints, filed police reports, and threatened to sue him over the book). Reading it gives you the impression that Tommy Thomas really doesn't care (or if you're French, DGAF).
