Where has KWAN's RM5b gone, Lim asks PM
go?
FMT reported on 16 May 2021 that DAP’s Lim Guan Eng said the prime minister must explain how the RM5 billion taken from the National Trust Fund (KWAN) for Covid-19 vaccine expenses is being used as the vaccination rate remains very low.
In a statement, the former finance minister highlighted Malaysia’s vaccination rate of only 2.3% (for those who have received the full two doses) is worse than Indonesia’s, which has a vaccination rate of 4.2% for its much larger population.
“How then was the RM5 billion spent? Malaysia is the worst Asia-Pacific country in Covid-19 infections per capita and our daily infection rate has now exceeded Indonesia.
“No wonder Indonesia uses Malaysia as a sorry example to warn its citizens not to follow in Covid-19 SOPs’ compliance failure,” he said, in reference to the Indonesian health ministry’s recent advice to its citizens to learn from Malaysia’s experience after the resurgence of cases in the latter.
Lim said there is a growing sense of “gloom and despondency” over the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths which has led to another movement control order.
“How many more MCOs must Malaysians endure, when the Perikatan Nasional government stubbornly refuses to admit its failure to manage the crisis and stop the policy flip-flops and SOP U-turns, sheer incompetence as well as double standards in enforcing MCO compliance?”
Lim also said many Malaysians are not feeling the economic benefits from the RM622 billion allocated to revive the economy since the start of the pandemic in March last year.
The government, he said, needs to explain why such a huge allocation does not appear to benefit Malaysians, and save jobs and businesses, especially in the retail, wholesale, construction, tourism and hospitality sectors.
“That is why Parliament must meet so that the government can come clean on its expenditure to ensure that every sen is fully accounted for to help Malaysians overcome this national crisis.”
