TONY FERNANDES REMAINS OPTIMISTIC

THE US FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) DOWNGRADED MALAYSIA TO A CATEGORY 2 NATION
Even though Malaysia Airlines could no longer expand via new routes to the US, there are “many ways of expanding to America”.

AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes remains optimistic that AirAsia can still expand to the US following a downgrade in air safety rating by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), reported FMT.

Speaking at a press conference at the AirAsia headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this evening, he said even though Malaysia Airlines could no longer expand via new routes to the US, there are “many ways of expanding to America”.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded Malaysia to a Category 2 nation.
Malaysia now cannot open new routes to the US or code-share with American carriers, but this will not disrupt existing operations. This also means Malaysian aircraft will be more closely monitored at US airports.
Only AirAsia X flies to the US at present.
Fernandes added that the downgrade may be a great opportunity for Malaysia to do better in the industry and come out stronger.
“We should not be negative. We should be creative and put our differences aside and work hard and be the best.
“I have no doubt in my mind that Malaysia will come out stronger from this, given the right people (are given) the chance to be the best,” he said citing Indonesia’s success of coming out of the Category 2 rating in 2016, after being downgraded in April 2007.
The FAA assessment is based on International Civil Aviation Organisation safety standards and focuses on the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM), and not individual airlines.
It cited deficiencies by the nation’s civil aviation authority in areas ranging from technical expertise to record keeping.
Recently, CAAM said they were confident of addressing the issues in 12 months and about obtaining Category 1 status again.
It also said some of the findings by the FAA were “ambiguous”.
It added that it is mulling an overhaul of its industry service charges to meet increasing costs.
Board member Razali Mahfar was reported as saying that some of CAAM’s issues, which had contributed to Malaysia being downgraded to Category 2, were due to a lack of qualified technical personnel, talents and technology.
Fernandes said CAAM — previously known as the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) — was one of the best in the world.
He added that he supported CAAM possibly increasing charges, but only if it means higher quality services.
“(Only) if it means that we save fuel in the air by more efficient processes and if we use that money to digitise and cut costs.”

MAHATHIR MAY REJOIN UMNO

What Mahathir expected did not happen Initially, Mahathir Mohamad thought his party – PPBM (Bersatu) – could  morph  into a new version of UMNO. After all, it was him who brilliantly destroyed the original UMNO in 1988 and created “UMNO Baru” (the current UMNO version 2.0). But unlike in 1988, Mr. Mahathir had quit UMNO to form PPBM on 8 September 2016, and was no longer in charge of UMNO. UMNO won four times higher than Bersatu in GE14 Hence, after he leveraged on opposition Pakatan Harapan and stunningly defeated the scandal-plagued Najib government, his first priority was  recruiting  UMNO MPs to join his party. OVERCONCENTRATION OF A MALAY POPULATION MAKES SHAH ALAM A GHOST CITY, SAYS ANALYST

Shah Alam City YESTERDAY, FMT reported that the capital city of Selangor had become very quiet, slow and almost no business, many buildings unoccupied, which one of them only utilised by less than ten staff of a company. Some factories closed down, businesses from petty traders to big timers closed shops for the past six months and so on. Even foreign business people from Indonesia and Pakistan decided to go back to their respective countries or moved to other places. A lawyer's personal opinion on Tommy Thomas' controversial book

  Read it while you still can REVIEW - *"My Story: Justice in the Wilderness" by Tommy Thomas* SPOILERS (Then again, it's a memoir, so does that really count? But you've been warned). Well I'll cut to the chase. I loved the book. But I think a huge part of why I loved it is because I also happen to be a lawyer, a litigator, and a keen follower of Malaysian politics. It doesn't hurt either that Tommy Thomas' values for the most part, align with mine. It's an honest book, in the sense that he really doesn't bother mincing his words or sparing anyone's feelings (that should be apparent by now, given the number of people who have lodged complaints, filed police reports, and threatened to sue him over the book). Reading it gives you the impression that Tommy Thomas really doesn't care (or if you're French, DGAF).
