Vacation

The fox was exhausted and desperately needed a vacation.

So she went to the lion, who happened to be the boss of the entire forest, and asked for some time off.

“I’m afraid that’s impossible,” the lion said. “We’re already short-staffed. There’s no one to cover your position.”

But the fox kept asking. She was so tired that she even offered to take unpaid leave. She didn’t care about the money anymore—she just wanted a little time to rest, travel, and enjoy herself.

“Fine,” the lion finally agreed. “But understand this: I’ll have to hire someone to fill your position while you’re gone. And when you come back, your old job may no longer be available.”

The fox agreed immediately and happily left for a month-long trip.

When she returned, refreshed and ready to work, she went straight to the lion.

“I’m back. I’d like my old job again.”

The lion shook his head. “Sorry. Your position has already been filled. The only opening we have right now is for a rabbit.”

“A rabbit?”

“Yes. You can work as a rabbit until the fox position becomes available again.”

The fox wasn’t thrilled, but bills were bills and everyone had to eat, so she accepted.

Weeks passed. Then months. But the fox position never opened up.

Meanwhile, the fox was completely fed up with working as a rabbit. All day long she had to run away from predators, hide in bushes, and eat carrots.

One afternoon, she was wandering miserably through the forest when she saw the rabbit bouncing toward her with his head held high.

“Hey, Rabbit,” she called. “What position are you working in these days?”

The rabbit smiled proudly. “I’m the fox.”

The fox stared at him. “Wait a minute. I’m a fox working as a rabbit, and you’re a rabbit working as a fox?”

The rabbit shrugged. “That’s what always happens…”

Then he leaned closer and added: “…when the lion’s job is being done by a jackass.”
