Marina, accept the truth of your own choice not to contest — your story doesn't help
Former Skudai assemblyman Cik Marina Ibrahim yesterday claimed she was offered financial backing to contest the Johor election, saying several individuals had volunteered to bear the cost of her campaign despite her decision not to stand.
Referring to a Facebook post after nomination day, New Straits Times reported yesterday, quoting Marina as saying she had received four nomination forms from different individuals over the past week.
She claimed some had offered to fully finance her campaign if she agreed to contest.
"'Marina... we'll bear all the costs.'
"'How much do you need for your campaign? Don't worry about it,'" she quoted them as saying.
Marina said she turned down the offers, adding that a long-time supporter had reminded her not to accept money from others if she ever decided to contest.
She also dismissed speculation that she would contest as an independent, join another political party or had been paid, saying she was relieved that nomination day had passed.
"How about those who kept spreading stories that 'Marina will contest as an independent', 'Marina is joining this party or that party', or 'Marina was paid'? Aren't you ashamed of lying?" she wrote.
Marina, who won the Skudai seat on the Pakatan Harapan ticket in the 2022 Johor election, had earlier announced that she would not defend the constituency in the Johor election, fuelling speculation over her political future.
Following her decision, rumours circulated that she would contest as an independent or switch parties, claims she had repeatedly denied.
For the Johor election, Pakatan Harapan has named J. Kartiyaini as Marina's successor in Skudai, where she will face Barisan Nasional's Nicol Tan, Bersama's Eugene Chua and Parti Sosialis Malaysia's (PSM) Amir Syafiq Ameer Soekre in a four-cornered contest, the English daily said.
Marina said she would continue serving the community despite not contesting, including helping residents through mobile service counters and conducting art therapy sessions for cancer patients.
"We were doing these long before I held any position. There's no reason we can't continue now," she wrote.
