Ibrahim Saad dies at 78

Bernama reported former Penang deputy chief minister Datuk Ibrahim Saad died today. He was 78.

The national news agency quoted his son, Zairil Ayu, as saying Ibrahim died this evening at the KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital.

Zairil said his father suffered a heart attack two weeks ago and had been treated at the hospital. After he was discharged, Ibrahim experienced breathing difficulties at his home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail today.

“He complained of breathing difficulty before being rushed to the hospital. Efforts were made to save him, but it was too late,” he was quoted as saying.

Ibrahim was deputy chief minister from 1990 to 1995 to Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon of Gerakan.

Ibrahim used to lead the Bukit Mertajam UMNO division and had also served as the Tasek Gelugor MP, deputy transport minister and Malaysian envoy to the Philippines.

He was reportedly also a former political secretary to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is now prime minister.

Penang UMNO chief Encik Musa Sheikh Fadzir expressed deep sadness over his death, recalling that he had served as Ibrahim’s deputy in Bukit Mertajam Umno in the past.

Met on the sidelines of an MIC event in George Town, Musa credited Ibrahim with being one of the key drivers in helping the Malays in Penang prosper when he was deputy chief minister.

Penang chief minister Encik Chow Kon Yeow recalled that it was during his first term as an assemblyman that Ibrahim was appointed as deputy chief minister.

He described Ibrahim as being influential and respected by the grassroots, yet still able to maintain a friendly and approachable demeanour.

“He was knowledgeable in political, social and economic issues and was able to debate well with DAP assemblymen during state assembly sittings,” he said.
