IIUM Professor Proposes Introducing An Act To Make Questioning Malays Origins A Criminal Offense

An influential Malay-language newspaper and news portal reported that Malaysia needs a specific law making it a criminal offense for anyone to question the origins of the Malays.

The publication, Sinar Harian, cited views from Professor Datuk Dr. Ahmad Murad Merican of ISTAC-UIAM (picture, top), who stated the country faces 'Malay phobia' and urged a ban on questioning indigenous Malay origins, adding that the Sedition Act is insufficient.

Ahmad Murad reportedly said that the country is now threatened by 'Malayophobia' and urged that any individual or party that specifically questions the origin of the indigenous Malays in this country be banned.

According to him, the Sedition Act is not sufficient to address the issue.

"The country is threatened with Malay phobia. The country needs a specific act that makes it a criminal offence for anyone to question the origin of the Malays.

"Ban anyone or any party that specifically questions the origin of the indigenous Malays in this country. The Sedition Act is not enough. Enough is enough," he said in a statement.

Ahmad Murad also urged the media and news portals not to be eager to report or comment on false stories about the origins and whereabouts of the Malays in Malaysia.

He said such actions should be questioned as they are not subject to offences related to fake news or incorrect reporting.

"Media and news portals should not be eager to report and comment on false stories about the origin and presence of Malays in Malaysia.

"Isn't that subject to the rhetoric of fake news or misrepresentation?

"Questioning the origin of Malays in Malaysia needs to be regulated by specific laws," he said.

He said that there is no country in the world where citizens of other countries display prejudice and insult the natives of that country, except in several Western and Asian countries.

According to him, in Malaysia, the situation has become a form of 'Malay-phobia' when native Malays are denied the truth of their origins.

"Such insults and expressions of hatred cannot continue in the name of freedom of expression, freedom of the press or academic freedom.

"Malays in Malaysia are the geographical and historical natives of the Malay Archipelago since time immemorial.

"What right do others have to question that fact? Stop the false allegations. Enough is enough brother," he added.

However, the professor did not explicitly refer to any party that led him to issue such a statement.

Dalam satu perkembangan yang agak memeranjatkan, teraju utama Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli mengesahkan Encik Syukri Razab ( gambar , atas sekali ) adalah presiden parti itu dan namanya berdaftar dengan Pendaftar Pertubuhan (RoS - Registrar of Society) Malaysia. Beliau merupakan bekas pegawai khas kepada Rafizi Ramli.
