Former Rengit assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has defended himself after UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki suggested that his resignation from the party was driven by dissatisfaction over his son not being selected as a candidate in the upcoming Johor polls.
In a Facebook post, FMT said Puad admitted that he had recommended his son for consideration but said there was nothing wrong with the move as his son had already been trained to contest in elections.
“Is it wrong for me to nominate him? Why is that an issue?
“If it is not allowed, why was the daughter of the Ledang division chief allowed to contest in Serom?” he asked, referring to Nadhirah Afiqah Abdull Rahim.
Puad stressed that his departure was driven by dissatisfaction with the Johor candidate selection, which he alleged was tainted with cronyism.
He cited the case of Alwiyah Talibas, who recently quit Bersatu to rejoin UMNO and was picked as the candidate for Endau within less than a month.
He said the party’s candidate selection system had become “exclusive”, adding that he was forced to take a “kamikaze” approach to highlight the issue.
“That is the candidate selection system that I protested. When my objections were ignored, what other choice did I have?” he asked.
Asyraf had earlier alleged that Puad had applied pressure on the party by insisting that his son be chosen as UMNO's candidate for the Rengit seat.
He said that Puad had written to him at length, warning that he would leave UMNO and “attack the party” if his son was not given due consideration as the candidate for the seat Puad had held from March 2022 until the Johor state assembly was dissolved earlier this month.
This was in response to Puad’s claims that Johor UMNO lacked autonomy in decision-making when announcing his resignation from the party earlier today.
Barisan Nasional had named Zaidi Japar as its candidate for Rengit when it unveiled its lineup for the 11 July polls.
