MCA urges government to come clean on Azam Baki and corporate mafia issues

Questions loom as to whether the government intends to quietly close the controversy surrounding MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki simply by allowing his contract to lapse, without giving Malaysians any proper explanation.
Failing to renew a contract does not amount to justice, transparency or accountability. It merely creates the impression that the matter is being swept aside without resolving the serious allegations that have damaged public confidence.
If Azam Baki has done nothing wrong, then the government should have no hesitation in establishing a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the matter openly and clear his name once and for all. If wrongdoing has occurred, then the public deserves to know why decisive action was not taken much earlier.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has repeatedly declared that his administration is committed to fighting graft and that no one, whether powerful or ordinary, will be spared. Malaysians are therefore entitled to ask whether this principle applies equally to all, including the head of the nation’s anti-corruption agency.
Reports from Bloomberg Asia, as well as statements attributed to Rafizi Ramli citing insiders, suggest that Azam Baki’s contract may not be extended. Yet there remains no clear explanation on investigations into allegations involving excessive shareholdings and links to corporate mafia.
This uncertainty only deepens public concern over the integrity of our anti-corruption institutions.
The allegations involve a senior public official entrusted to uphold integrity. Such accusations are more serious than ordinary bribery cases because they strike at the very credibility of enforcement bodies. That is precisely why silence and delay are unacceptable.
Earlier this year, a special committee led by the Chief Secretary reportedly examined the shareholding issue, and its findings were submitted to Cabinet in March. Why has the report still not been released to the public?
With Azam Baki’s contract nearing its expiry, Malaysians deserve clarity, not discreet exits and unanswered questions.
To restore confidence, the government must immediately establish an #RCI into the excessive shareholding allegations, as well as claims involving the #MACC and the police. Only an independent and transparent investigation can rebuild trust in Malaysia’s commitment to combat graft.
Anything less will only reinforce the belief that anti-corruption slogans are easier spoken than practised.
