Pahang-born artiste-composer bags Emmy, marking historic win for Malaysia
Malaysian composer Joy Ngiaw has made history after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition for an Animated Program for her work on the WondLa series on Apple TV+.
Reporting the fantastic news yesterday, The Star said the Pahang-born artiste shared the story on Instagram following the 4th Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, which took place at Lincoln Center in New York City on 1 and 2 March 2026.
Yesterday, Monday 9 March, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) congratulated Ngiaw in a social media post, saying the achievement once again proves that Malaysia’s creative talents are capable of making an impact on the international stage while continuing to elevate the country’s name in the global content industry.
“May this accomplishment inspire a new generation of artistes to keep creating and conquering the world,” Finas added, as quoted by the English daily.
In an interview with the magazine Grazia, Ngiaw spoke about the challenges she faced breaking into the industry.
"Growing up, there weren’t many composers who looked like me scoring projects in Hollywood.
"Often, I walked into rooms where I was the only woman – and sometimes the only person of colour.
"I’ve had people look surprised when I introduced myself as the composer, not an assistant.
"I’ve had to work harder to prove myself, and that’s a constant reminder of why representation matters."
