'Undi18' initiated by its president doesn't help Muda at all

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman

To survive, Muda has no choice but to work with any coalition, be it PH-BN or PN

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman may have created his own personal achievement when the Muar Bersatu MP was appointed as minister by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed-led Pakatan Harapan in 2018 at the age of 25.

But that's it. Nothing has been done significantly by him for youngsters in the country during his tenure as minister of youth and sports.

As a young boy and then Bersatu youth chief, he was one of a few personalities initiated Undi18 so as to enable 18-year-old Malaysian citizens and above to be qualified to vote, instead of 21 as minimum age previously.

Supported by most MPs from both sides (government and opposition), it was then approved by parliament.

The lesson we learn from this issue is that young voters are not meant exclusively for young politicians.

Muda in Malay language means young, reflecting the political party's membership and leadership. The leaders there may be professionally qualified with dynamic mentality and creative.

Muda was formed after Syed Saddiq quit (or sacked by) Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), the official name for Bersatu. He is the founder of Muda, the short name for Malaysian United Democratic Alliance.

The leadership team members led by president Syed Saddiq may have all the required qualities but their political inexperience could have been overlooked.

As a result, they failed in Johor state elections in March last year. The worst situation is when they didn't win any of the 19 seats and lost deposits in recent August 12 six-state elections.

They claimed that they went solo, but obviously they knew that they had no chance at all to win. Their presence in the elections has been observed as a party to split votes between two fighting titans, Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN). And Muda has done a good job for PN!

What is Muda's future? The members will determine and they have been talking about changing leaders to lead the party.

One thing, Muda has no choice but to work with any coalition, be it PH-BN or PN.

Let's read the following article taken from FMT, published on August 13, 2023. The article shows people were unhappy as they observed Muda was helping PN, meaning PAS, Bersatu and Gerakan, to win the state elections:

Netizens took to social media to vent their anger over Muda’s purported role in splitting the vote in yesterday’s state elections.

@bumilangit was more direct: “Just get rid of Muda already. Arrogant, ignorant, and splitting the votes, causing PN to win.”

Twitter user @hermyrahim blamed Muda for Pakatan Harapan’s Ustaz Zawawi Mughni losing the Sungai Kandis seat to Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad.

Muda candidate Afriena Shaqira took 1,341 votes, but Wan Dzahanurin’s victory was by a mere 167 ballots.

“Sungai Kandis lost by 167 votes, if Muda didn’t contest, we would have won,” he said.

Another Twitter user @Familiarise sarcastically congratulated Muda for its perceived role in splitting the votes.

“Congratulations, Muda, for splitting the votes. That’s your only function,” he said.

Twitter user @Chairman_GLC appeared to have lost his patience with the party.

“I have been lenient with Muda all this while. No more,” he said.

Recently, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the party took full responsibility for the defeat of its candidates, who all lost their deposits.

Seat clashes between PH and Muda are not new, with a PKR and a Muda candidate clashing in the Johor state election in 2022.

PKR, a core party in PH, had criticised Muda over its decision to stand in Larkin.

In June, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman dismissed the notion that the party would hurt the PH-BN alliance’s chances of winning.

Muda’s decision to go solo for the August 12 state election saw the party challenge the PH-BN alliance in several seats.

  1. Who knows that majority of votes that Muda took in Sungai Kandis could have gone to PN increasing its majority. Only wishful thinkers thought otherwise.
