If PAS gets nothing in Johor, why should PAS allocate seats for UMNO in Terengganu?

UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the party cannot adopt a ‘one size fits all’ approach to legislative elections as the political landscape differs in every state.

FMT reported today, UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan proposed an election in PAS-led Terengganu as proof the Islamic party is sincere about Malay unity.

If the two parties could agree on a formula for seat negotiations in Terengganu, a similar approach could be adopted for the next general election, said Mohamad, who is known as Tok Mat.

UMNO was wiped out in the 2023 Terengganu state election. It failed to win any of the 27 seats contested after also failing to win a single seat in the 2022 parliamentary general election. There are eight parliamentary seats in Terengganu.

“I would like to test PAS’s sincerity. If it is sincere, let’s divide parliamentary seats between PAS and UMNO,” he said in his winding-up speech at the UMNO general assembly.

On a separate matter, Mohamad said UMNO cannot adopt a “one size fits all” approach in an election as the political landscape differs in every state.

Johor and Selangor had their own narratives, while the approach adopted for the Negeri Sembilan polls last month was aimed at preventing clashes among Malay parties.

Such an approach was adopted in Negeri Sembilan because UMNO missed out on seven Malay-majority seats in the 2023 state elections.

He said that was why party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamdi gave the mandate to state leaders to negotiate based on what was best for the party in the state. “The party must benefit from these negotiations,” he said.

UMNO and PAS formed an electoral pact for the Negeri Sembilan state polls, and won 26 of the 36 seats.

Zahid initially said Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional would continue their alliance in the coming Melaka polls. However, this appeared to have reached an impasse after Zahid said BN wanted to contest the 21 seats it won in 2021, while PN contended that negotiations were still being held.

Melaka has 28 state seats. In 2021, PH won five, and PN two.
