MP Wong Chen tells Dewan Rakyat Speaker he wants to resign

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said today that Subang Jaya MP Encik Wong Chen of PKR has told him that he wants to resign.

Johari said Wong spoke on the matter when they met on Wednesday. “He proposed resigning as an MP and gave his reasons for doing so,” FMT said the speaker was quoted by Berita Harian as saying today.

However, Johari did not confirm whether Wong had handed over a letter regarding his proposed resignation.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Wong said he had met Johari for about one and a half hours that morning, during which he handed him a letter. He did not specify its contents, but posted an image of the letter, which was on the Subang MP’s office stationery, and addressed to Johari.

Wong said he would release a press statement on the matter next Monday evening.

Wong is one of three MPs from PKR who have been barred from accessing the MyKhas portal, which manages special funding for constituencies. Ampang MP Puan Rodziah Ismail was the latest to be barred from the portal on Wednesday while Petaling Jaya MP Encik Lee Chean Chung had questioned last week why he had been barred.

All three had attended the launch in May of the Bersama party, founded by former PKR leaders Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Encik Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Query over Selangor assemblyman

Separately, a member of the Selangor state assembly will be called up by the Selangor speaker, Encik Lau Weng San, to verify his eligibility to remain in the state assembly.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri  Amirudin Shari said checks would also be conducted with the insolvency department, following an allegation that the assembly member had been declared a bankrupt.

Amirudin said the power to declare a seat vacant rests solely with the speaker.

Media reports had recently fuelled speculation over the possibility of a by-election following a bankruptcy order against a state assemblyman.

However, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur set aside the order today. A copy of the court order shown to the media stated that the assemblyman had successfully obtained an order setting aside the bankruptcy order after the High Court allowed his application under the Insolvency Act.
