Tunku Mahkota Ismail blasts 11 years of excuses in Malaysian football

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has hit out at the state of Malaysian football, saying the sport has been stuck in a cycle of excuses and conspiracy theories for over a decade, New Straits Times reported today.
While JDT continue to dominate the domestic scene, many other clubs remain plagued by financial turmoil, poor pitch conditions and mismanagement.
Delayed salaries remain a recurring issue, leaving players demotivated, while deteriorating stadiums and facilities further expose the gulf between clubs.
"The problem is simple. If our house is in bad shape while our neighbour's house is beautiful, does it make sense to burn down the entire neighbourhood?
"It's like having a house that's unkempt and in poor condition, then asking everyone to move into the jungle."
"They themselves don't pay salaries, then blame it on the FA of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Football League (MFL)," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The Johor Regent also called for Financial Fair Play (FFP) to be enforced in Malaysia to ensure clubs are held accountable for their finances.
He also believes match officials should no longer be under FAM's control, suggesting the need for an independent refereeing body.
"If people are still not happy, then pay for foreign referees," he said.
Tunku Ismail likened the situation to Bundesliga clubs complaining about Bayern Munich's dominance instead of focusing on their own improvements.
"For 11 years, it's been the same, excuses and conspiracies. It's like in the Bundesliga, everyone asked to boycott the league because they can't challenge Bayern (Munich). Mindset is everything," he added.
