CEO changes career to become a food delivery rider

Even though he does not come from a well-off family, Encik Indera Aria Wee Jeeny once tasted luxury when he served as the chief executive officer (CEO) of a company providing a food ordering and delivery platform.

Through the company, which started in October 2019, popular Malay-language newspaper and news portal Harian Metro reported, Indera, 40, managed to generate profits of up to RM6 million and even had 3,000 active food delivery riders in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah.

According to him, the company remains a strategic partner under the auspices of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), but suffered losses believed to be after an individual sold the Internet Protocol (IP) address to a competitor for personal gain.
Starting January 2021, the situation worsened until profits plummeted to between RM40,000 and RM80,000, before the company was on the verge of bankruptcy.
As a result, Indera was forced to sell various assets to pay the salaries of the employees under his company.
Sharing his story, the father of two said his life changed 180 degrees after his business went under, to the point where he did not have enough money to buy food.

He strived to bounce back, even willing to set aside his ego to start from the bottom, despite once being an employer.
"It wasn't easy to bounce back because when I first hit rock bottom, I had to dig for coins just to buy food... let alone walk long distances because I had no vehicle.
At that time, I started to notice changes in the people around me, especially those who used to be close but began to distance themselves—probably because they were afraid I’d approach them to borrow money.
It was heartbreaking because during my good times, I had helped them, and I even questioned why I was tested so severely.
But I had to accept the reality, and after self-reflection, I found peace and convinced my heart to accept God's will," he told the Malay daily.
After facing that challenging phase, Indera admitted there were times he almost gave up on rebuilding his business and company.
However, he was motivated to rise again after remembering the words of his employee, a food delivery rider, who remained grateful despite a small income.
"At that time, he (the delivery rider) only earned RM20 but was very happy because he could buy food for his child.
"Those words became a morale booster and gave me hope to rise again, realizing that I need to help many people out there," said Indera, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Currently, Indera works independently to earn a living as a food delivery rider and charges a fee of between RM5 to RM10 for personal shopping services.
In addition, Indera also helps people in need whom he encounters on the streets, especially those who require assistance with changing vehicle batteries and tires.
"I used to hit rock bottom and lost hope, so I don't want others to feel the way I did.
"So while delivering food ordered by customers, I will ride around the areas I pass through to help those in need.
"I meet people in need almost every night, and once I even found a family that had not eaten for two weeks. I am not well-off myself, but I try to help as much as I can."

"It is because I remembered the advice of someone who reminded me to never let a day pass without helping others. It is satisfying to be able to help, and I do not ask for anything in return; I only hope that the person can pray for me," said he, who has work experience as a sales engineer, marketing executive, marketing and sponsorship officer, as well as a state manager.
Indera said that he considers what happened in his life as a test and an experience that helped him mature.
"I never expected to face all of that, but the experiences I went through will be used as a guide for the future.
"I am also determined to rise again as a successful entrepreneur to create job opportunities, because through that, I can help more people out there," he said.
