If I'm not mistaken, Negeri Sembilan customs are all under women's control

What exactly is this IBU SOKO?

Based on references, IBU SOKO is a specific term for a woman in Negeri Sembilan who is skilled and becomes an expert in various matters, especially regarding the flow of traditional practices.

If translated, ibu soko is a woman who is knowledgeable and experienced in the customs and traditions of her own family group, as well as a consultant in customs, social, economic and political matters.

Ibu Soko is also responsible for implementing religious and customary provisions, continuing the lineage of her family group, ensuring that her descendants become useful members of society and have a civil attitude.

Regarding the hastily made 'midnight declaration', a polemic has erupted as an attempt to draw a comparison between the written State Constitution and the unwritten 'heartbeat' of our customary lands.

There are those who claim that Ibu Soko — inherited from luak — do not have the 'constitutional' standing to overturn the measures taken by the Undang.

Such a view is a great mistake that considers ink more important than blood and paper more important than soil.

The importance of the source of power

Ibu Soko's argument can be dismissed simply on the basis of a literal reading of the State Constitution. However, the Negeri Sembilan Constitution does not exist in a vacuum; it is a formalisation of Adat Perpatih. Citing state law while ignoring the mother's (Ibu Soko's) law is like trying to revive a tree after its roots have been cut.

As the saying goes, “Alam beraja, Luak berundang, Suku berlembaga, Anak buah berbuapak.” This hierarchy is a closed circuit. In terms of procedure, even though the Board can dismiss an Undang, the action remains an empty gesture without the blessing of Ibu Soko.

We must remember that the Undang and Lembaga are basically ordinary people – candidates who only received the mandate to lead because of Ibu Soko who confirmed their blood and character.

Thus, the power of an Undang is not a personal possession; it is a trust held on behalf of the Luak. Since the bloodline is traced exclusively through the female line, Ibu Soko (Mother Soko) is the sole guardian of the legitimacy of the power.

If she withdraws recognition of the behavior of a Chief Luak, then that mandate has effectively dissolved. It is like boasting about a sophisticated device but ignoring the fact that Ibu Soko (Mother Soko) — our true source of power — has unplugged its batteries.

Someone might be holding the device, but there is no life behind the screen. A chieftain without a Luak and his men behind him are just a man in a costume.

Total Consenses Vs Declaration

From a legal perspective, the validity of any declaration of the king's removal depends on the concept of total consensus. In our custom, total consensus is not simply the majority vote in a room; it is the coordination of the entire social structure from the bottom to the top, representing every subordinate.

Wait a minute — when did we, as citizens, ever give these men a mandate to depose our king and engage in partisan politics?

The hasty midnight declaration, without the support of the Menteri Besar and without the refinement of the House of Justice and Undang (DKU), is a blatant procedural and legal failure. Ignoring these important elements means they have stepped outside the protection of the law.

Under the very strict conditions of Article 10, the removal of a monarch requires more than just a signature; it requires a very strong reason and not just personal vendetta.

Let us not forget that the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan is one of the nine Malay rulers protected by the Federal Constitution. Have we forgotten that the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong was our own Yamtuan Besar?

One only needs to look at the money in his wallet to see His Majesty's portrait. Do we want to say that our first Agong was less sovereign than other Malay kings, thus legitimizing this act of treason that disrespects the law?

When custom is ignored and the state executive is sidelined, such actions are no longer just disputes — they are a form of outright rebellion. This is a warning especially to those in Johol, Jelebu, and Rembau.

In the context of modern law, attempting to undermine state sovereignty through unconstitutional movements is a serious offense that warrants action under the Penal Code.

However, we must wonder why the Federal law enforcement agencies seem to be silent while a Malay king is being bullied by those who are acting outside his mandate!

Is the protection of the Federal Constitution only selective for certain Malay rulers, with the exception of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan — who is expected to be the next in line for the throne of Yang di-Pertuan Agong after the Sultan of Perak's term expires?

The Mother's Veto Power

We must remember that Ibu Soko is the ultimate guardian of our land and title. In Adat Perpatih, the law of the mother is the first law. To claim that their sacred role can be downplayed for political gain is a discordant and essentially “un-adat”.

After all, in Negeri Sembilan, one must ask: Who is the real owner of this land? Fellow Natives, you are advised to check your Indigenous Land grant — unless, of course, someone has changed the grant, which seems to be a common practice in Negeri Sembilan now without fear of legal action!

Does your father own the land, or your mother? Never challenge the empowerment of women in Negeri Sembilan; our mothers held the keys to power and grant to this earth long before the rest of the world started drafting charters on equal rights for women.

The peace of our home is only as strong as its pillars—and those pillars are firmly planted in the matrilineal land of Ibu Soko.

As the old saying goes, "Mother Soko guards the fox fence" — that is, Mothers guard the border from predators who want to destroy our harmony.

Women in baju kurung

When there is indecent behavior in Negeri Sembilan, regardless of what the act is and trying to save themselves by taking advantage, then it is the women in baju kurung who will come forward to correct it!
