Hishammuddin, Khairy and Syed Hamid accepted back into the fold of UMNO
Malaysiakini reported late last night that the UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) meeting held last night decided that the party has agreed to accept back its former leaders, including Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Mr. Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, and Tan Sri Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar.
UMNO Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said the Supreme Council fully supports the "Rumah Bangsa" (House of the Nation) initiative, proposed by its President, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to accept back, without conditions, any members who were suspended, expelled, or left the party.
"Among the names of applicants decided upon by the Supreme Council include Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar, and 6,252 former leaders and members at the UMNO Division and Branch levels throughout Malaysia," he said in a statement.
In 2023, the UMNO Supreme Council (MKT) sacked Khairy, who is also the former UMNO Youth chief, and its Supreme Council member, Tan Sri Noh Omar.
Several other leaders were suspended, including Hishammuddin, who was suspended for six years.
Last March, Khairy expressed his intention to rejoin UMNO following Ahmad Zahid's announcement "opening the doors as wide as possible" to former members who had been suspended or sacked.
Hishammuddin also stated his readiness to return to the party if the leadership is sincere about lifting his suspension.
Meanwhile, Asyraf said the UMNO Supreme Council meeting last night also approved amendments to UMNO membership rules to allow new member registration to be done online, in line with efforts to facilitate the entry of young people into the party.
He said the Supreme Council also discussed the issue of the cost of living for the people, who are affected by rising oil prices and global inflation, in addition to the impact of international economic uncertainty.
In this regard, UMNO leadership in states governed by the party, specifically in Johor, Melaka, Perak, and Pahang, are advised to focus on providing additional assistance to various affected community groups.
UMNO also announced the organization of the party's 80th Anniversary Celebration, which will take place from May 1st to 5th at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, featuring various programs including conventions, education congresses, and entrepreneurship carnivals.
Furthermore, he said, the Supreme Council is allowing the Wanita (Women), Pemuda (Youth), and Puteri (Princess) wings to hold branch meetings in a hybrid format to facilitate member participation, especially in years without party elections.
