Don't promise to someone old and poor
Your promise means everything to him
One cold night, a rich ma noticed an old, poor man standing outside.
He asked him gently, “Aren’t you cold, standing here without a coat?”
The old man smiled faintly and replied, “I don’t have one, but I’ve learned to live with the cold.”
Moved by his words, the rich man said, “Wait here. I’ll go inside and bring you a coat.”
Hope lit up the old man’s face as he agreed to wait.
The rich man went inside… and became distracted.
Hours passed. The night grew colder.
By morning, the billionaire remembered the old man and rushed outside—but it was too late. The old man had died from the cold.
Beside him lay a note. It read: “When I had nothing, I had the strength to endure the cold because I was used to it.
But when you promised me warmth, I held on to that hope—and in doing so, I lost my strength.”
Moral of the Story
Never make a promise you cannot keep.
What may seem small or forgettable to you can mean everything to someone else.
