1 million rupiah equalling RM262 makes visiting Indonesia more enjoyable

The depreciation of the Indonesian rupiah to a record low has resulted in an increase in the number of Malaysian tourists visiting the country, said New Straits Times yesterday.

The more stable exchange rate of the ringgit has provided an opportunity for Malaysians to travel to the republic, with lower costs for hotels, food, and transportation.

According to data released by the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of Malaysian tourists rose by 24.22 per cent at the end of last year, contributing to 18.3 per cent of international tourists to the country.

Malaysia has remained the largest contributor of foreign tourists to Indonesia since 2022, with the number of visitors reaching 2.27 million in 2024, surpassing other countries such as Australia, Singapore, China, Timor-Leste, and India.

Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (Mata) president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun said the more favourable exchange rate of the ringgit compared to the rupiah has led to an increase in Malaysian tourists to Indonesia.

However, other factors also contributed to the influx of Malaysian tourists to Indonesia, he said.

"Indonesia continues to be a preferred destination for Malaysians due to factors such as proximity, convenient flight access, comfortable accommodation, high-quality hospitality, and a wide variety of halal food options.

"This makes planned travel easier and safer for Muslim tourists from Malaysia.

"The combination of modern infrastructure, an efficient digital payment system, and budget-friendly transportation and goods costs makes travelling to Indonesia not only worthwhile but also enjoyable."

Furthermore, there are various tourist attractions and competitive package promotions available, he said.

He said Indonesia remains the destination offering the best value for money for every ringgit spent.

Meanwhile, local travel agency Flywind Holidays director Razly Mohamed said Indonesia is the second most visited country by Malaysians after Thailand.

"The main factors are the depreciation of the rupiah, affordable and frequent direct flights, and domestic packages that are far more value for money.

"Among the preferred destinations for Malaysians are Batam, Bali, Jakarta, Bandung, Banda Aceh, Padang, Bukit Tinggi, Jogjakarta, and Medan."

Indonesia accounts for 50 per cent of our total bookings compared to other countries, he said.

As of yesterday, the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) against the Indonesian rupiah (IDR) showed a positive trend, with the current exchange rate standing at approximately 1 million rupiah equalling RM262.

This is a significant difference compared to a few years ago, when 1 million rupiah was equivalent to RM320.
