Instead of helping Gerakan, super-ambitious PAS wants Pulau Pinang Chief Minister post

Analysts say Pulau Pinang PAS’s willingness to allow Gerakan to use its own logo in the 16th general election (GE16) is aimed at shielding Perikatan Nasional (PN) from blame in the event of defeat.

According to interviews conducted by FMT, Dr Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara (above picture) reportedly said PAS appears “indifferent” to the proposal, noting that Gerakan was intent on using the opposition coalition’s platform to advance its own political ambitions.

Azmi said PAS has long been frustrated by Gerakan’s failure to draw non-Malay voters to PN, especially at the last state polls in August 2023 and the Sungai Bakap by-election.

“Previously, Gerakan was able to blame their losses on the extreme views of PAS leaders. If the party still cannot attract non-Malay voters using its own logo, then it would only have itself to blame,” he was quoted as saying.

Azmi said PAS, on the other hand, would be able to justify cutting ties with Gerakan if the latter underperforms even when contesting in its own stead.

Dr Syaza Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) (top picture) said the proposed arrangement would allow PAS to attribute any victory to the PN coalition.

“If not, then (PAS) can put the whole blame on (Gerakan’s) strategy,” she said.

However, Syaza advised Gerakan against contesting under PN’s logo at GE16, saying the coalition has become “synonymous with Malay politics”.

During its annual general meeting on Sunday 28 September 2025, Puau Pinang Gerakan chief Encik Oh Tong Keong floated the idea of the party contesting GE16 under its own banner.

Oh reportedly said he had urged the party’s central committee to raise the issue with PN’s Supreme Council. He said many Penangites still mistakenly believe Gerakan to be a Barisan Nasional component.

Addressing the proposal, PAS’s state information chief, Encik Fawwaz Jan, said each party was entitled to craft its own approach. He noted that some parties had successfully contested under their own logos during GE15.

Syaza said PAS’s support for Gerakan’s proposal pointed to an ongoing battle between the two parties within Pulau Pinang PN.

“PAS has (seven) seats in the state assembly. It wants to lead Pulau Pinang PN, while Gerakan wants (the mantle) to pull the non-Malays away from DAP.

“(PAS is) letting Gerakan have its way (for now). If it still fails to attract votes, then PAS can demand the leadership of Pulau Pinang PN,” she added.

Pahang DAP exco man awarded RM1.2mil damages over libel

Lawyer Encik Ng Yih Miin (left) said the court found that Pahang executive councillor Encik Sim Chon Siang (right) had not misused funds related to Malaysians trafficked to Cambodia and Myanmar, as alleged. Pahang executive councillor Encik Sim Chon Siang has won a defamation suit against social media influencer Encik Tony Looi, with the High Court in Kuala Lumpur awarding Sim a total of RM1.2 million in damages. As reported by FMT , lawyer Encik Ng Yih Miin said the court ordered general and aggravated damages against Looi, the defendant, on 9 April 2026. “The defendant is to pay RM800,000 in general damages and RM400,000 in aggravated damages, together with interest at 5% per annum from the date of judgment until full settlement, as well as RM10,000 in costs,” Ng said at a press conference yesterday. What I think about Rafizi’s new Party, BERSAMA By the way, that was me signing my application to join PPBM or Bersatu back in 2016. I was excited to welcome a new party that can reset Malaysia after Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak’s 1MDB. I was probably as excited as some of you planning to join Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli’s Bersama political party. My PPBM membership was 000068. Talk about being one of the first. Najib lost PRU14 in 2018 bringing the collapse of UMNO dominance since Merdeka.  Najib said UMNO would be dominant for 1000 years but in reality UMNO lasted just 61 years. Hubris was Najib’s downfall.  Tun M was at the helm and I was excited, finally we would see progress. I was wrong.
