BUDGET PASSED AT POLICY STAGE
THE federal budget has been passed at the policy stage in the Dewan Rakyat today after the majority of MPs present supported it through a voice vote.
FMT reported that the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun announced the outcome of the voice vote on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2021 after Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz tabled it for second reading.
The passing of the budget indicates that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin still has majority support in the Dewan Rakyat to continue leading the nation.
However, Mahfuz Omar unhappy with the voice vote stood up requesting for a bloc vote.
Speaker Azhar asked if there were 15 MPs to agree on the bloc vote.
“Do we have 15 MPs?” he asked.
As Mahfuz stood up, some of the MPs called those standing “traitors” for going against the budget.
There were only 12 other MPs who stood up with Mahfuz.
“There are 13 MPs standing up. YB Pokok Sena, we don’t have 15 MPs. There are more voices who support Budget 2021.
“The bill has been passed,” Azhar said, adding that the debate at the committee level will be held from Monday onwards.
The federal budget goes through two stages of voting. The first is at the policy stage, which was approved today, and the other at the committee stage, which will see MPs debating on the details of the budget.
